February 27th is National Protein Day, which aims to raise awareness of a vital nutrient and the role it plays in all of our lives.
It’s never a bad time to talk and learn about protein, and this special occasion gives us an extra opportunity to appreciate and educate ourselves about how protein works. But what exactly is protein, and how can we build more of it into our day-to-day? Read on to learn more and look out for a special WOW HYDRATE protein offer!
Protein for beginners
Proteins are large organic molecules formed by our bodies and used in almost every part of our biology. We need protein to power our metabolism, clot our blood, drive our immune response, and as a central ingredient for everything from bones and cartilage to skin and hair.
The building blocks of protein can only be acquired from what we consume. This makes protein one of the most important parts of our nutritional intake. It can help us stay fit, promote weight loss and increase muscle mass. Likewise, a lack of protein can lead to impaired healing and slower recovery.
Athletes and body builders are acutely aware of the importance of protein to their performance and recovery, but it’s equally essential to the health of each one of us, no matter how active we are, whether male or female, and at every stage of life.
A long history of research has expanded our understanding of many of these benefits. Key milestones include a 2006 US government study that showed reduced hunger and improved weight loss among women on a high-protein diet, demonstrating the value of protein to weight loss. And in 2019, Wake Forest University found that “a high-protein, low-calorie diet helped overweight older adults lose more pounds, maintain more muscle mass, improve bone quality, and lose ‘bad’ fat.”
Research continues, and new discoveries are still being made, which is part of why it remains important to raise awareness about our ongoing understanding and relationship to protein.
Protein sources
There’s a wide variety of ways to add protein to your diet. All kinds of meat are a source of protein, as well as fish. But it’s increasingly important to consider alternatives to meat, especially for those pursuing the benefits to ourselves and the planet of a meat-free lifestyle.
Both eggs and dairy products (milk, yoghurt, cheese etc) contain a lot of protein. And there’s no shortage of high-protein foods for vegans too – from superfoods like broccoli, beans, lentils, chickpeas and quinoa to many nuts and seeds. And then of course there are soy products, including tofu. All in all, there’s no excuse not to include plenty of protein as part of a rounded diet!
Even better, you can supplement your intake with modern protein drinks, protein powder and other protein products. WOW HYDRATE is a great example of this: drinking our specially tailored and scientifically formulated protein water can be a great boost to your nutrition, while keeping you hydrated with a refreshing and delicious flavour!
How much protein do I need?
There are multiple guidelines for how much protein per day is best, but a common rule of thumb is to aim for 0.75 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight every day. That means about 45g for the average woman, 55g for the average man, which is around two portions of the foods mentioned above. A typical portion of protein can fit in the palm of your hand.
A bottle of WOW HYDRATE Protein contains 10g, while Protein Pro contains 20g, giving you a significant boost to your daily intake.
Protein attitudes
In the UK, awareness of protein and its benefits is on the rise, with 77% of Brits now looking to consume more protein, according to a recent survey. There are plenty of reasons people mention – improving their post workout recovery, staying fuller for longer, and keeping up energy levels while on-the-go are just a few of the top concerns.
Overall, as people learn more about the importance of a balanced diet and all the benefits of key nutrients, protein is only gaining more of a spotlight.
